Mieko Kimura Philips Endowed Scholarship
Mieko Philips was born and raised in Japan. While in college, she came to the United States on a Rotary Exchange Program and studied at Michigan State University receiving a BA in psychology. She returned to Japan and completed her studies receiving a BA in English Literature with a minor in international relations. Mieko returned to Michigan State University to complete her MA and Ph.D. in linguistics.
She has taught Japanese language and linguistics at Lansing Community College for over 30 years. While at LCC, she has been active in providing students with opportunities to study abroad and have educational experiences in other cultures. Mieko believes that goodness in human beings is enhanced by studying the humanities fields and she hopes this scholarship will advance this belief.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in Linguistics, Japanese Studies, and other World Languages Studies, Humanities, or Music programs at LCC
- Maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits
- Recipients must have a GPA of at least 2.5
- Recipients must have a history of community service
- Financial need will be considered
