The Brenda Young Scholarship

Brenda Young was the Director of Technology Support Services/Information Technology Services at Lansing Community College until her retirement in 2022; she worked in information technology for 35 years. Brenda began at LCC as a student employee working as a lab aide in the Business Division Computer Lab. After one semester as a student employee, she became an applications programming tutor for Accounting and Computer Academic programs. Brenda continued to work for the next 10 years in the academic area as an assistant computer lab supervisor and was then promoted the lab supervisor. During that time, she was assigned coordination and supervision over all of the disparate computer labs on campus (Business Division Computer Lab, Office Systems Computer Lab, Interactive Learning Center, Computer Science Lab, and Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing Lab). Brenda also taught computer classes for 7 years. Next, she transferred to central administration computing where she spent the next 25 years in computer support positions to eventually becoming the Director of Technology Support Services.

Brenda earned her Associate’s degree in Business/Applications Programming at Lansing Community College (Go Stars) and Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems at Northwood University. The Brenda Young Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance for Lansing Community College students who are pursuing degrees and certificates in any STEM program.

Qualifications

  • Recipients shall be enrolled in any Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) program at LCC
  • Recipients shall be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
  • Recipients shall maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Preference will be given to minority students
  • Financial need will be considered
