James Bonneau Memorial Scholarship

At 12:12 a.m., on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Officer James Bonneau, while on patrol, responded to 140 Mitchell St. in the City of Jackson to assist Blackman Township Public Safety Officer Darin McIntosh in interviewing Elvin Potts, a suspect in a domestic assault situation which originally occurred in Blackman Township. As Officer Bonneau and PSO McIntosh attempted to speak to Mr. Potts, he began fighting with the officers. After a brief struggle, Mr. Potts fired a handgun multiple times, striking both Officer Bonneau and PSO McIntosh. PSO McIntosh returned fire, killing Potts. Officer Bonneau succumbed to his wounds at Allegiance Health at 1:42 a.m. on March 9, 2010. PSO McIntosh survived.

The James Bonneau Memorial Scholarship was established by the Jackson Police Department, the community, and Officer Bonneau’s parents, Marc and Amy Bonneau, to honor Officer Bonneau’s service and sacrifice to his community.
