Toba and Stan Kaplowitz
Toba and Stan Kaplowitz are both lifelong educators. Toba received her BA from the University of Michigan and MS in Teaching from Bank Street College of Education in New York. After graduating from college, Toba taught pre-school for over twenty years. In Lansing, she taught at both Community Nursery School and the co-op nursery at Foster Community Center. She began to work for LCC in 1987 as a field advisor and started teaching classes in 1992. Toba says that she chose teaching as a profession because “I am passionately committed to the idea that early childhood education is a noble profession. Those who are in this profession have the potential to have a substantial positive impact on both children and their families. However, to realize this potential, it is important that those who become teachers of young children work to become the best teachers that they can be.” She is proud that she always challenged her students, helping them achieve the goal of being highly competent professionals.
Stan Kaplowitz is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Adjunct Professor Emeritus of Communication. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and a BS in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. Dr. Kaplowitz specializes in social psychology, especially of attitudes and communications. His major current research interests are increasing energy-conserving behavior and public support for energy conservation policies, cost-effective identification of children with high risks of lead poisoning, and public attitudes towards donating tissue to bio-banks.
They have established the Toba and Stan Kaplowitz Child Development & Early Learning Scholarship because of their desire to support exceptional students studying in the Child Development & Early Learning program.
