Friends and Family of Allan Maar

Our friend and colleague, Professor Allan Maar, passed away in 2016 ago and we’re still thinking of all the things he taught us about learning and laughter and supporting students. Allan believed that education was empowering for students at all levels of development. Allan wrote the grant that established a Reading Clinic at LCC that has since grown into the current Center for Transitional Learning, serving students in Reading, Writing, GED preparation, English as a Second Language, and Student Development course work.

Allan was:

  • A wonderful story teller
  • Multi-talented and humorous. Great sense of irony.
  • Very hands-on. Gifted and talented. Visionary.
  • Down to earth kind of guy
  • Tireless, even when tired
  • Loved the theater and talking about theater
  • Reader of the Chronicle and the Lansing State Journal every morning
  • Every student, every person, mattered to him
  • MDEC Educator of the Year
  • LCC Outstanding Professor of the Year
  • Student Awards Banquet enthusiast
  • Practical, e.g., made sure students had glasses if needed
  • Keeper of a treasure trove of long accumulated materials to reach any student need
  • Overarching knowledge framed everything
  • Always selected a positive comment to highlight on our evaluations (as our chairperson)
  • Leadership style encouraged us to give our best
  • Believed in the importance of refrigerators, coffee, and newspapers
To continue his legacy, we have established a scholarship in his name in the LCC Foundation. The funds raised will allow developmental and GED students who currently qualify for limited or no financial aid to enroll in course work that will help them develop skills in reading, writing, or speaking. The scholarship is particularly focused on native and non-native speakers who have a need and no other sources or limited sources of financial aid available to them.
